Quote-a-palooza

“Freedom had been hunted round the globe; reason was considered as rebellion; and the slavery of fear had made men afraid to think. But such is the irresistible nature of truth, that all it asks, and all it wants, is the liberty of appearing.” – Thomas Paine

“There are no hopeless situations; There are only men who have grown hopeless about them.” – Clare Boothe Luce

“There is no safety for honest men except by believing all possible evil of evil men.” – Edmund Burke

“The patriot volunteer, fighting for country and his rights, makes the most reliable soldier on earth.” – Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson

“Education never helped morals. The smarter the guy, the bigger the rascal.” – Will Rogers

“We’re brainwashing our children. They’re going to the Gore movie [‘An Inconvenient Truth’] and being fed all this. It’s ridiculous.” – Dr. William Gray, a pioneer in the science of seasonal hurricane forecasts at Colorado State University

“[T]he better description of Clintonism is slipperiness. Adaptability. Cynicism, if you like… [Hillary] has no principles. Her liberalism is redeemed by her ambition; her ideology subordinate to her political needs.” – Charles Krauthammer

“If the Turks cut off our ability to use Incirlik [Air Base], there’s no question that this could jeopardize our troops on the ground in Iraq. And frankly, if this is just the latest in the Democrats’ string of back-door attempts to force a retreat from the war against al Qaeda, it’s certainly the most dangerous.” – House Minority Leader John Boehner

“Some think the way to beat the Democrats in November is to be more like them. I could not disagree more. I believe that conservatives beat liberals only when we challenge their outdated positions, not embrace them. This is not a time for philosophical flexibility, it is a time to stand up for what we believe in.” – presidential candidate Fred Thompson

“I mean, if we do Hillary-care and socialized medicine in this country, where are the Canadians going to go for health care?” – Rudy Giuliani

“Hillary Clinton took a tour of Iowa on a bus she named the ‘Middle Class Express.’ She had to be talked into it. Her aides convinced her it looked a lot more humble than touring the state in a Gulfstream jet called the ‘Air of Inevitability’.” – Argus Hamilton

Jay Leno: Congratulations to former Vice President Al Gore. He won the Nobel Peace Prize. How about that? And he did it without a single vote from Florida. … Now that he’s won the Nobel Prize, Al Gore has a huge, international platform to fight global warming. Kind of sad – today he stepped onto that platform and it collapsed. … A lot of people are wondering now if Al Gore will run for president. Which would make it a Gore vs. Hillary Democratic primary. Kind of a global warming vs. global cooling. … Barack Obama is attacking some of Hillary Clinton’s comments on torture. At one point, Hillary had said that “in some narrow cases torture could be acceptable.” Like, for example, if your husband is sneaking in at 2:30 in the morning. … The Taco Bell restaurant chain is about to open in Mexico City. Today, the government of Mexico called it a hate crime. … China is outraged that we would honor the Dalai Lama at the White House. I hope they don’t try to get back at us – you know, maybe put lead in our toys or antifreeze in our toothpaste.

Somebody stop Tim McCarver before he kills more brain cells!

Last night during the ALCS game, Tim McCarver remarked that FOX had done some research and determined that teams are more likely to score two or more runs when a batter leads off an inning with a home run than if he leads off with a walk.

Think about that: McCarver apparently believed that a team is more likely to score two runs because they have a runner on first base than they are likely to score just one run because the team has already scored in the inning. Walks are bad, but they’re not more damaging than a home run. I’m sure my girlfriend, who’s still a bit shaky on the difference between a ball and a strike, could see the flaw in McCarver’s logic.

Why is this guy paid so much money when he clearly doesn’t understand the game?
