Chávez threatens opponents

The Venezuelan president, Hugo Chávez, today threatened to strip the country’s industrialists of their assets if they continued to oppose his indefinite presidency.

Human rights groups, the Catholic church and other opponents warn that revisions to the constitution will concentrate power in Chávez ‘s hands – charges that government allies dismiss as rhetoric from an economic elite afraid to lose privileges as the country moves toward socialism.

Yesterday Chávez said he was freezing relations with Colombia after Uribe halted his attempts to reach out to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), leftwing guerrillas who have waged a bloody civil war against the Colombian state for decades.

Nope, no danger of a dictatorship here.

This is more than a little tilted. Columbia is basically a narco-regime, that sponors right wing terrorism and I have no idea why we are lending them blank check support. It is like this do you support a Maoist Farc or do you support a Francoesque Uribe…they are both not good choices. Both are kidnapping and doing all kinds of terrible stuff. Threatening the poor Jesuits, intimidating Bishops. I do not approve of that at all. I also have it from a good source that the relations in the freezer part is being resolved by the over 1.5 million Columbian business people whose primary customer is VZ.

I think if we were really playing it smart in the region we would let them deal with it without any intervention, except to defend the rights of the really brave people, priests and nuns who have the courage to tell the truth about everybody….Firebrand politicos are the norm…on both sides of the divide. Its been that way for about two centuries. Reconcilliation would be a great word for everybody to internalize. I know Michelle Blanchete in Chile is doing her best to do that.

Personlly, and for us, I am more worried about Mexico, and if I could I would throw our diplomatic realtions with Mexico in the freezer for their violation of human rights, desecration of the church, failure to deal with immigration issues and holding us responsible for them, in addition to their anti-americanism which is grown all out of proportion, as well as their constant threats to us; which always leaves me wondering why this litany of angry threats coming from Mexico City does not make it on CNN- especially when they come from our next door neighbor who we fought a huge war with? Finally, I am much less worried about VZ or Columbia than the cocaine that is going to come to our streets from the new Peru free trade deal.

  2. Well, he just hired the Guiliani group consulting firm so he may become a dictator. And that is not a joke as much as I wish it was.
